Dear Sis. Cahoon
I have been assigned to a very wonderful sister to visit for over a year. More and more I am uncomfortable going into her home. My problem is her husband. He makes me feel very unwelcome. This brother refuses to shake my hand when we meet, has repeatedly become contentious with me when our family has been in his home, and is very rude to me. This is not just my imagination; my husband notices it, too. When he was my home teacher, I approached him to help my husband give me a blessing for my migraines, but he told me that when he was going to school, he had migraines and it didn’t stop him from what he had to do. He refused to give me the blessing. Needless to say, I don’t go there. It isn’t that they don’t want Church contact, she is the YW President, and he is first counselor in the Bishopric. Should I ask for another assignment?

Dear Brother Cahoon,
I have a young girl in a family that is very adamant about something a seminary teacher supposedly taught her. She insists it is a misconception generally misunderstood throughout the church. That Satan’s plan in the pre-existence was never to redeem mankind, but only to take away our agency and have we sin on earth never being able to regain the presence of our Heavenly Father. Moses 4:1 says to me that is not the case but she insists that the entire church is mistaken. Please help.

Dear Brother Cahoon,
Brother Cahoon, I am a new second counselor in the elders quorum presidency and would appreciate any ideas that would help me in this calling and the brethren in the quorum. What does your quorum do for projects, activities, and motivation of the quorum? I am trying to get ideas. Hope to hear from you soon.

Dear Brother Cahoon,
I saw an e-mail notice in my first issue of Shepherds that you have advice for Home Teaching. I am the new elders quorum president and our home teaching statistics in our ward is VERY low. Please, do you have any suggestions, links, stories, etc. that you can share with me? Thank you!

Dear Brother Cahoon,
Recently I have been caught up in a sticky situation. One of the brethren in my ward is insistent on talking about “deep doctrine” whenever we are together. He would expound his supposed great pearls of wisdom to me for hours at length. He is on my home teaching list, and now as a result of his insistent monologues on various aspects of doctrine I no longer want to visit with him as I feel his teachings are damaging to my own development. He insists that he is right and excuses his passion for doctrine delving with logic and pride. The teachings of the prophets are to stick to the basics, faith, repentance, good works etc. How can I get through to this person that it is not the obscure points of doctrine that matter the most, but the larger issues that the prophets have spoken of.
Sincerely,
Concerned Brother

Dear Brother Cahoon,
We recently became friends with a family that moved into our apartment building. They are members of our ward and have been having some challenges. We recently found out that the husband is abusive and we have reported him to the authorities on a couple of occasions when there has been evidence of physical abuse. He knows we have done this and has confronted my wife while I was not home. He has since blamed us for his inactivity. While all of this was happening I was called to be the elders quorum president and feel the need to help this man overcome his challenges. I am praying everyday to be able to love him so that I might help him. How can I help him see the error of his ways and take responsibility for his actions? How can I show Christlike love to this man who has threatened my wife? How can I help him come back to the Lord and find true peace and happiness.

Dear Brother Cahoon,
Our home teachers in our ward are also our friends. Lately for some reasons unknown to us, this nice couple has been inactive for several months and we do not see them nor do they call us much anymore. This is a delicate situation. The wife was just recently appointed my visiting teacher last month, but aside from our all having dinner together once last month, I have not seen her. She has not shown up in church for over 6 months. Any suggestions? Could my husband and I extend our love somehow to them? Or what?

Dear Brother Cahoon,
I’ve been visiting a semi-active, young couple for two years. They weren’t home for May’s appointment. I phoned them every other day to reschedule, only to end up with voice mail. I got a call two weeks later saying they’re busy for the rest of May and all of June. The sister seemed agitated during our short conversation. Their anniversary was last week, so I left off a card and a message. I don’t feel that I’m able to magnify my calling with a token visit such as this. What do you suggest?

Dear Brother Cahoon,
Do you know where I can find a sample letter to send to those inactive members that have said they want no one visiting their homes?
